"As spring moves into summer, many of us start looking for an easy-drinking white wine for the deck or patio at the end of the day. My wine-tasting panel said folks should look for a "people-pleasing" white, the kind you would normally pair with lighter foods. Many American winemakers blend the juices of various white grapes to come up with wines that are refreshing and don't necessary require food. My tasters compared five white blends and made recommendations for just that kind of wine.

2008 CHENIN/VIO
Aroma:
The nose offered scents of Wheat Thins, slate, wet stone, lemon-lime, melon, citrus and mild yeastiness.
Palate:
On the tongue, we tasted tangerine with a bright, nice acidity. It had light body – a beautiful seafoam character.
Verdict:
Made from Chenin Blanc and Viognier, this really pretty wine was voted No.1."

"Two labels stood out from the pack when the bags came off in our blind tasting, including the PETS bottling from Vinum. "Pets" is an old nickname of Petite Sirah, and the bold black- and red-lettered label states that a portion of the profits from the sale of this wine will be donated to a San Francisco SPCA animal-shelter fund."
